Summer returns - for a day or two

The next few days will see a brief return to summer in the UK as temperatures reach the low to mid 20s, about 10 degrees higher than the national average for October (14°C). Record maximum temperatures reached a dizzy 28.9C in 1921.

These unseasonally high temperatures are caused by a change in wind direction bringing air originating in the Mediterranean and North Africa towards our shores.

Unfortunately the wind direction will change again by the end of the weekend with temperatures returning closer to the seasonal average.

"Take advantage and get outside this weekend! Especially if you are in a region which has been swamped for the first few days of the month such as Yorkshire, like me!" said Dr Liz Bentley, founder of theWeather Club.
